Open source and free archive utility that was developed by Igor Pavlov. 7Zip runs on Windows and includes both a GUI interface and a command line interface. The command line interface is also available on Linux and Mac.
Originally designed to compete with other file formats 7Zip sports the 7Z format which is an efficient compression format that competes head to head with Zip and RAR. the current version of 7Zip supports many other file formats including Zip and RAR (read only). Opposite to archive utilities like WinZip and WinRAR, 7Zip is completely free and open source which makes it the archive utility of choice to many.
7Zip supports many advanced features sometimes not found even in commercial archive tools such as 256 bit WinZip compatible AES encryption on both file and folder level.
